Adding Colour

While some of our racegoers will go to extraordinary lengths to find the right outfit for Ladies Day, I have to say that I find it relatively easy. I simply pull out the least wrinkled suit from my wardrobe and look for something to add a splash of colour – something red, perhaps, to match my eyes.

Colour matching, I’m told, is a vital skill possessed by those who know how to dress with style. It’s lucky, therefore, that we have a number of experts on our doorstep.

Among the many Ladies Day themed shop-window displays in Kelso this week, was a collage of a glamorous female racegoer (decked in curly ribbons, peering over a stable door) at Pattersons Paints on Bridge Street. The shop window display was designed by Corinne Robertson, claiming the top prize amid colourful competition from many of the town’s retailers including Dessert Diva, Hume’s Ladieswear, and the new crafting shop in Roxburgh Street: Began With a Bow. If you find yourself in Kelso Square this Whit Holiday weekend, take a look at them all.

The thing about Pattersons Paints, of course, is that colour is their speciality. Pop into the shop and you can order paint in any shade imaginable. That’s exactly what we did last week, when seeking a bold shade of pink with which to paint the backdrop to the catwalk for Sunday’s Style Awards – where the brave, the beautiful and the fashion-conscious can strut their stuff in front of the Ladies Day judges.

Because, while there are some high-value prizes for those competing on the track, (this week’s selection is Carcaci Castle in the £20,000 Henderson Group sponsored Handicap Hurdle at 3.25pm), there will also be a fantastic array of prizes on offer for those competing in the fashion stakes, including: a luxury stay at the SCHLOSS Roxburghe Hotel for the most stylish couple, a bespoke tailored suit (from A. Hume) for the most dapper chap, a table for four guests in hospitality for the best vintage costume, and hundreds of pounds worth of boutique shopping vouchers for the “Kelso Queen of Style”.

In addition to the shopping vouchers, the Queen of Style will be invited to enjoy a consultation (and Champagne), together with three friends, with Borders-based personal stylist Lauren Jamieson, from the Colourful Edit. Lauren, one of those aforementioned colour matching experts, has been involved with Kelso’s Ladies Day Style Awards since 2018, which makes me wonder why we didn’t ask her to nip down to Pattersons Paints and select the colour for the catwalk…
